Kittens learn faster in the first month at home than at almost any other point in their lives. What feels like chaos is really a month of intensive education — mostly yours.
Week one: small world, big reassurance
- Keep the kitten in one safe room with everything they need
- Feed frequent small meals rather than one large bowl
- Handle gently and often, but keep sessions short
- Let sleep happen — kittens need a lot of it
Weeks two and three: expanding the map
Open one new room at a time. Introduce normal household sounds at normal volume. Start a short daily play routine with a wand toy so hunting energy has somewhere to go that isn’t your ankles.
Play, then feed, then sleep
Following play with a meal mirrors a natural hunt-eat-groom-sleep cycle and helps settle evening zoomies.
Week four: habits become routines
By now litter habits, feeding times and sleeping spots have mostly chosen themselves. This is the moment to gently correct anything you do not want to live with for the next fifteen years.
Veterinary schedule
Vaccination, parasite prevention and neutering timelines vary by region and by kitten. Follow the schedule your own veterinarian recommends rather than a general article.
