How to Create a Cat-Friendly Home

A cat-friendly home does not have to look like a pet shop. Most of what cats want is height, sight lines, warmth and somewhere to disappear when the doorbell rings.

Think in three dimensions

  • One or two high resting spots per cat
  • A window view with a stable surface to sit on
  • A covered hiding place at floor level
  • Scratching surfaces near the places your cat already scratches

Plants and hazards

Several common houseplants are toxic to cats. Check any plant against a current veterinary toxic plant list before bringing it home, and contact your vet or an animal poison service immediately if you suspect ingestion.
